A Weekly Prayer Devotional Seeking God
to Pour Out His Spirit in Revival on Us[*]

A Deviant god

I find it amazing that what the Bible calls sexual immorality continues to make regular (usually weekly) headlines. Even more surprising is the degree to which it is not run of the mill sexual immorality (e.g., ordinary heterosexual immorality), but the most deviant forms of sexual immorality that are the regular headline makers in our culture.

Two examples are MAPs and sex dolls. Taking the less egregious first, consider the advent of sex dolls. Its not just the development of silicon that feels like real skin. Its more than the use of quiet motors that yield anatomically correct movement. Its beyond the interchangeable body parts for maximum personalization. Its even far past the development of Ais that effectively mimic human expression. No, the greatest atrocity of sex dolls is how the worldly sophisticated and wise proclaim these latest innovations as a great blessing for many who do not have access to sexual intimacy with another. What? Sex dolls provide a solution for the involuntarily celibate (incels)!?

The MAPs example is even worse. It is the latest acronym in a culture that champions sexual (expression) rights as one of the most vital human rights. This acronym describes a group of people who are (supposedly) among the most unjustly sexually repressed minorities in our culture! MAPs stands for: Minor Attracted Persons. Another term for these folks is, yep, that’s right: pedophiles, people who believe that sexual satisfaction can only be found in raping a child. Of course, making this wickedness sound more acceptable are the variations assigned to these “poor” sufferers: ephebophilia: sex with post-pubescent children, hebephilia: sex with pubescent children, pedophilia: sex with pre-pubescent children, and intfantophilia (nepiophilia): sex with children under five years of age.

What has happened to our culture? It is worse than it has lost its mind. Even more, it has turned sexual expression into the sine qua non, the essential characteristic of one’s own identity. Any hindrance to allowing someone to express their sexual desires is tantamount to torture unto death. We have lost our souls:

Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles. So God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired. As a result, they did vile and degrading things with each other's bodies. (Rom 1:22-24 NLT)

The folks we’re called to witness to have been bowing before the altars of the god of sexual deviancy. In praying for revival witnessing to them, it will help us to consider two things: 1) this is not new, and 2) this is idolatry.

Not a New Deviancy

Looking at the history of the OT Church, there is an interesting comment about one of the reasons God paused Abraham’s family from taking over the Promised Land:

After four generations your descendants will return here to this land, for the sins of the Amorites do not yet warrant their destruction." (Gn 15:16)

The label Amorite is another name for the tribes that made up the various descendants of Canaan who populated the Promised Land. God intentionally paused fulfilling the Promised Land promise to Abraham’s descendants because the Amorite’s iniquity (their sin with its guilt and its corruption) had not yet reached its full expression. This full iniquity was marked by: heterosexual immorality of every imaginable kind, plus incest of any kind, homosexuality, bestiality, even necrophilia (cf., Lv 18). Interestingly, MAPS and sex dolls, clearly included in these others, is not named. This is because some sexual sins are so far outside the pale of ordinary possibility that God saw no need to specifically warn us against them. How does our culture respond to this omission? “Well, if God didn’t speak against it, then that means it must be ok.” This was certainly the attitude of the Amorites/Canaanites. Their sexual wickedness led them to corrupt both themselves and the very land in which they lived. God’s response:

Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, for the people I am driving out before you have defiled themselves in all these ways. Because the entire land has become defiled, I am punishing the people who live there. I will cause the land to vomit them out. (Lv 18:24-26)

What are we to take from this? Simply this: as shocking as our culture’s growing sexual deviancy is to us, we can take comfort in two considerations: 1) it is not new, and 2) God will not allow it to continue. This gives hope.

Not a New Idolatry

At first glance, this second observation might seem a bit odd: our culture’s sexual deviancy is idolatry:

So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don't be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. … You can be sure that no immoral, impure, or greedy person will inherit the Kingdom of Christ and of God. For a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. (Eph 5:5; Col 3:5)

Note the correlation between sexual immorality, greed, and idolatry. Greed is idolatry because it longs for things of this world, even more than longing for God:

Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be…. No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. (Mt 6:21, 24)

And sexual idolatry is an expression of greed-idolatry because it longs for possession of sexual satisfaction more than satisfaction in a relationship with God.

The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. (1Co 6:13 ESV)

This is the tragic vileness of sexual deviancy: it traps people into worshipping their own sexual identity.

One More Reminder

Running out of space here, let’s end with one more significant reminder: Jesus lived, died, and rose again to break all our idolatries, including all our sexual idolatries. “Such were some of you” in 1 Corinthians 6:11 is the guarantee that the forgiveness and cleansing in 1 John 1:9 is true! Let us take this promise to our family/friends/neighbors/strangers. Whether they’ve worshipped the sexual deviancy god or not, they need the only good news that can slay it! Let us pray for our own sexual purity, and then take this hop to our family/friends/neighbors/strangers.

Prayer Advice

Dear Lord, our culture is in the grips of a god of sexual deviancy. This idolatry grows and grows, as more of our people succumb to its worship. Bless us with Jesus’s purity and then send us to tell them the good news that will break the bonds of this god over their lives.

Restore to us the years the locusts have eaten. Pour out Your Spirit in revival on us. To Your glory, together with Your Father and Your Spirit, we ask, Amen.

[*] This weekly prayer devotional focuses our attention on some aspect of our need for the Holy Spirit to bring revival to our church. Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you (Ps 85:6)?  For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams (Isa 44:3-4).  Pick a 15 to 30-minute time-block in your schedule over the next week and use this devotional to focus your prayers. As you can, consider fasting from a meal and using that time to pray for revival in our church.
